Diana’s gift to medium fetches £14,000

 LONDON. An 18-carat gold necklace by jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels which Diana, Princess of Wales, presented to English medium Rita Rogers in 1997 just days before her tragic death in Paris, has been sold at auction for £14,000.
Diana consulted Rita Rogers on many occasions between 1994 and 1997 and she was accompanied by her lover Dodi Fayed – who also died in the car crash – at her final sitting.
Photographs of them arriving by helicopter made the front pages, giving new emphasis to Diana’s paranormal interests. A few days later, on 13 August 1997, the necklace arrived accompanied by a handwritten letter from Diana which said:
“Dear Rita, This necklace was made for you and comes with so much love to a very special lady with an extraordinary gift.... from x Diana x.”
The necklace, designed as a series of polished yellow gold interlocking heart motif links, is signed VCA and hallmarked 1996.
Mrs Rogers, 67, who has two daughters, decided to auction the precious gift and the letter so that there would be no family conflict about its inheritance after her own passing. Auctioneers Christie’s estimated the two items would fetch between £4,000 and £6,000 when they were put up for sale as one of 230 lots in its Jewellery auction in South Kensington, London, on 4 June.
“Diana was a dear friend who I miss greatly,” said Mrs Rogers. “But she wasn’t sentimental about possessions, and I know she wouldn’t want her gift to cause a problem between my girls when I’m gone, so it is with great reluctance that I have decided to sell it and use the proceeds to good effect.”
A donation from the proceeds will be given to local hospices, in memory of the Princess.
